What is Hobbit Hollow?

Hobbit Hollow will someday be my interpretation of a Hobbit House. It will look similar to the shed I built on these pages only larger and with all the amenities and comforts that any admirable hobbit family would enjoy.

I have purchased a beautiful lot in upstate New York where I intend to build Hobbit Hollow. This lot is only 70 miles north of New York City and about an hour and a half train ride from Grand Central train station.

My dream is to open Hobbit Hollow, when it is finished, as a vacation rental. People would be welcome to spend a night, weekend or week there and enjoy all the comforts and simplicity of Middle Earth.

Hobbit Hollow will be a unique structure and is in a sense an experiment in home construction. This house will combine geothermal and passive house features with a composite concrete and wood frame building envelope. It will be a 1500 square foot 2 bedroom 2 bath home with accommodations for up to six. I’m hoping the cost will make this type of construction economically feasible for middle income families.

Once I have my building permit and begin construction I will be updating the pages of Hobbit Hollow here every 3 to 4 months or so. Hopefully by July or August of 2012 we will begin demolition of the existing structure. This project will be a weekends only endeavor so be prepared for the long haul! (At least 2 to 3 years.

I would like to thank my wife, children and all the people who have commented on myhobbitshed for giving me inspiration and strength while taking on this task!

Best wishes,

Jim
